In editing "A History of Southern Missouri and Northern Arkansas", a variety of sources were researched in an effort to identify the people Monks wrote about and fill in gaps or holes in his narrative.  In his heyday Billy Monks generated a lot of newspaper coverage, positive and negative.  He filed civil suits, was sued and even charged with murder.  This paper trail allows us to a more balanced view of these turbulent times and Monks' involvement in the events described in his book.
