Eds. South Missouri Journal:

Mr. Editor: - Tax collecting for 1871 is slow business.  J.F. Kidwell began his swinging around the circle on the 4th inst., and closed the day with about $50, in greens, making a difference of several hundred dollars collected at the same place in 1867 by Wallis, and stolen by Monks.     –One

Silence ceases to be a virtue when such accusations are publicly herald forth by the offscouring of horse thieves, cut-throats and Ku-Klux.  Now, I say that the author of the above article is a calumniator, a thief, a cut-throat, a bastard, a coward and a liar of the deepest dye.

I am not afraid of the record of the past, and will, if desired, begin at Alpha and go through to Omega, and show the world who the thieves are.  If you are for a showing of records, come out like men and who your colors.    -Wm. Monks
