Murder in
Fulton County
We learn that Capt. Mason
was murdered by some unknown persons, while passing along the road somewhere
in Fulton County, on Saturday last. It appears
that Capt. Mason, in company with five or six men, was riding along the road,
when suddenly three or four guns were fired by persons in ambush, two balls
striking Mason, killing him instantly, and another ball passing through the
clothes of another of the party. None
of the men with Capt. Mason saw any of the party who fired.
Mason was a man of bad
character, and was accused of several murders.-He was probably killed by
parties who entertained feelings of revenge for some of his past acts, and
who took advantage of the unsettled condition of affairs to kill him, hoping
that it might be attributed to political animosity, and thus shield
themselves. He was president of the
board of registration in Fulton County, and we have no doubt the radical press and party will attribute his
death to political causes, and endeavor to make political capital out of the
matter.
