Murder.

We were pained to hear of a fatal occurrence which took place last week in Howell county, Mo.  This county adjoins Fulton county in this State.  Gov. Clatton’s militia, when in Fulton county, took from Mr. Azariah McKinzie a fine horse, (supposed to have been taken by some of Monks’ men.)  Mr. McKinzie made search for his horse and found it in the possession of a Dr. West, of Howell Co., Mo., the father a lieutenant in Monks’ command.  Mr. McKinzie went to the seat of justice of that county, and procured a writ to recover his property.  The writ was placed in the hands of the Sheriff to be executed.  The Sheriff, in obedience to the command of the writ, went to West and demanded the possession of the property.  West refused to give it up, and the sheriff attempted to take it, when West drew his pistol and fired upon the Sheriff three times, one ball took effect, and the wound was mortal.  The Sheriff then drew his pistol, while in the agonies of death, and fired five times at West-three of which took effect and he died in a few moments.  The Sheriff was dead in a moment after his last shot.  They were both radicals. – The way of the transgressor is hard. – God, in his own good time and mysterious way, takes vengeance upon the wicked and the oppressor.  Last fall, when the Missourians made their raids into Arkansas, and murdered Uriah Bush, and others, Monks and the Allsops were united, and participated in the outrages perpetrated upon our innocent citizens.  The however, afterwards disagreed.  The Sheriff was an Allsop partisan, and West a Monks adherent.  As to the merits of their quarrel we know nothing, but God, in His providence, is taking vengeance upon the guilty.
