After Monks

The following joint resolution was introduced by Mr. Ray, in the Senate, on the 5th inst.  It was laid over under the rules.  When inquiry was made, if the truth is elicited, we think it will be discovered that Monks holds a commission as Lieutenant Colonel in the Arkansas militia. – He has about forty Missourians under him, and is now operating with Upham in Crittenden County.  If the members of the General Assembly do not wish to be regarded in the same light as gov. Clayton is by the majority of the State –(not very favorably, by any means)- they will pass this resolution, and sift the outrage to the bottom.

Here is the resolution:

Resolved.  That His Excellency, Governor Powell Clayton, be requested to furnish such information as to show by what right, and by what authority, this man who is called “Capt. Monks,” of Missouri, is acting under, in the State of Arkansas, with an armed force of men from Missouri; and by what authority they are recognized here in the State of Arkansas, and report the same to the General Assembly of the State of Arkansas.
